“You’re full of shit Linda”.. Said Cambridge Councillor Ben Tucci, as he stormed out of a Landlord Protest Rally

“You’re full of shit Linda”.. Said Councillor Ben Tucci’ as he stormed out of this mornings rally.

Well Cambridge you missed quite a show this morning..  (This is my spin on it) I can’t wait to see the version from CTV news..

Kayla Andrade a local Landlord called a rally this morning pertaining to the water bills being dumped on local landlords. Now I don’t have all the details on this topic..

I have invited Kayla Andrade to write her story and present it here for you our readers.

But what I do know is this.

When Kayla took to the steps at city hall to read her prepared speech, The camera/news person from CTV was out on the sidewalk the entire time interviewing Ben Tucci !!.

I went over to this person and asked why was she interviewing Tucci when this young lady was speaking?

This reporter got quite indignant with me and said she needed background information.. I suggested she tape the young lady and then interview Mr Tucci later.

She said if I didn’t like what she was doing to take it up with her boss Michael Mellings. I told her I would.

Mr. Tucci then took to the steps and got more coverage…( it is election time after all)

He informed us, the audience, that he was the only incumbent that showed up.

Meanwhile I was standing beside Linda Whetham councilor for city of Cambridge for the past 10 years and currently running for Mayor of Cambridge..

And Rick Cowsill incumbent for Ward 2 Hespeler for the past 20 plus years..

I guess Ben just assumed he was the only incumbent that counted.

Linda Whetham then stepped up and spoke…

She reminded Ben Tucci that it was HE, along with…

Doug Craig, Karl Keifer, Gary Price (all conveniently absent) voted YES… to use this hydro fund to build Craig’s castle and now the fund is empty.

LINDA WHETHAM AND RICK COWSILL,  where the only 2 who Voted against using this fund to build Craigs  new city hall.

Mr Tucci had his family present, and Mrs Tucci went after Jan Liggett ( who is currently running against Mr.Tucci in this upcoming election) making untrue allegations against a member of her family… It was a pretty sad sight..

If you can’t win fair and square, then you get down and dirty.. Show up at a rally, try to steal the limelight, then have your family insult your Competition.

When all else fails, you walk away and yell over your shoulder…

”You’re full of shit Linda “

Are you serious? A professional politician would behave as you’ve described, in public? I knew things were heating up nicely here in Elmira with the candidates scrapping over election signs and each others records over the last four years. By Monday they might get even more heated but these actions in Cambridge make the Elmira and area politicians seem almost like normal folks.

Sorry, I must correct myself here..the headine indicates that Ben made the remark, but from your article, (at the end) it sounds as though Mrs. Tucci “went after Jan Ligett”…Just want to be clear, which one was it?????
This is tooooo funny. I love it when people say what they really think. Just want to be sure, whether it was Mr. or Mrs. Tucci who did so……LOL LOL LOL……….If it was Mrs. Tucci, she should run for office! Again, LOL!!

Kudos to Linda for reminding us that our hydro fund was used to build this new city hall and kudos to both her and Rick Cowsill for voting no and trying to be “guardians of our public purse”. Unfortunately for us the taxpayers, these are the only 2 on our present council that have consistently voted no to unnecessary or frivolous spending but have been constantly out voted by the remainder of our council.

Linda questioned the people as to “where were you” when this took place. Many of us, myself included sent letters to council and voiced opinions opposing this expenditure at that time, but our voices of protest and objections did not seem to matter to the remainder of our present council, ( with the exception of Pam Wolf, as this was done prior to our last election ), who voted to go ahead with this anyway.

We do not elect a council to “go on a spending spree” with our tax dollars, we elect them to be “guardians of our public purse” . As the majority of our present council are hell bent on putting us further into debt with this Drayton Theatre please question all candidates that are running and please please vote for the ones that will state that they will “guard our public purse”

Due to our current state of affairs, with many out of work and many struggling to make ends meet, what is needed is a ” zero tax increase” next year. If we had better “guardians of the public purse”, maybe we would have had that this year !!!!!!

You’re so right on how this current council has dragged us into debt, with no regard for the families of this city.
Linda made a strong point when she asked the gathered crowd “Where were you, when this was voted on?”
Her point was… we need the residents of this city to pay closer attention to what council is doing to us and our tax dollars.
She is 100% right asking this question… The problem is, as you well know…

This current council does not release the Agenda for the Monday night council meeting until late Friday afternoon….this in my personal opinion is no accident… They count on you not having time to read it in its entirety (Bev I know you read every word of it) but not all have the time to do so.

So what happens, they vote on the issues they want passed… this is wrong… The public need to pay closer attention to what our council is doing at these sessions.

Debbie, the fact is I was asked by the organizer to step up and speak which I never shy away from. I didn’t steal the limelight Debbie, it was the organizers who chose to put me in the centre of it. One of the first things I did when I was up there was to acknowledge that Rick Cowsill and Linda Whetham were in the audience. You were probably to busy going after the news reporter to hear that. I also questioned why when they too had voted in favour of the water billing issue, they weren’t being questioned as I was being questioned? When did I become the single deciding factor on Council? Was this really a rally by landlords for landlords? I’ll leave that to the general public to decide. As far as the news person involved, she has been doing her job for years and doing it very well. Your verbal assault against her for doing her job was rude and saddened me. Say what you must about me but please for god sake, leave my family out of this. My wife Catherine, my oldest daughter Brittany and I were out enjoying the day at the farmer’s market when I decided to walk over to the “rally”. Brittany did not deserve the verbal assault by one of my opponent’s biggest supporters. I won’t name her here or the insensitive comments she made. She knows who she is and she knows what she said to my Brittany. I didn’t learn of this exchange until we got home and Brittany broke down over it. I still to this day don’t understand the level of hatred you feel towards me. I’m not sure there is anything I could have done to warrant it. All I can say at this point is that win or lose; I will continue to walk with my head held high. Proud of this City, proud of my contribution, proud of my family and the friendships and acquaintances I have made over my 13 years on Council.

    Best wishes to all! BEN

Ben, it was only this morning (in fact just a few minutes ago) that someone told me they had “overheard” the ugly words thrown at your young daughter. I was extremely upset to hear this. But now to hear that your daughter ‘broke down over it’ (after arriving home)….I am not only ‘upset’, I am disgusted (by the offender) and saddened for your daughter.

I’ve never made any bones (at the beginning) about my support for Whetham, but I wish to assure you and everyone else, that I have never been part of her actual ‘campaign team’ nor do I condone the actions of some who are part of that team; especially anyone low enough to ‘verbally assault’ your child.

In fairness to Linda, she actually pulled Brittany away when it happened. The person is a supporter of my opponent having also endorsed her on her web site. Margaret, if this had been a “rally about landlords for landlords”, it would not have turned into an attack on me, my family or the news reporter doing her job.

On Saturday October 16th I attended Kayla Andrade’s Rally at Cambridge’s City Hall. This rally was for the landlords and tenants, to speak their minds of the water bills that landlords will soon have to pay if their tenant(s) choice not too. Things went very well, up until a few of the councilors, up for election right now, started to attack one another. I feel that these few councilors should have kept their issues with each other for the next debate, and not for public display at this rally. I found it sort of sad that some family members decided the need to bring in their opinions and rudely insult other councilors during this rally. Brittney Tucci is an adult, and she should have been prepared to get some kind of response in return to the attitude that she had towards this subject at city hall and toward the people who spoke openly about they way some councilors were acting. At times during this Rally I almost forgot what we were there for. These councilors seemed to have used this as a free advertisement, to gain votes and maybe even some pity in this election. Honestly if you were there to support this landlord’s rally you all shouldn’t have been acting like little children in elementary school disagreeing on class president. This wasn’t a session for councilors to get free news coverage (you know who you are), and the way that some of you acted makes me wonder do I really want any of these people to represent my vote in City Hall. Some councilors have been very interested in helping Mrs. Andrade and all these concerned landlords with this ridiculous law soon to be in effect, and that is very appreciated. I hope next time (if this does seem to happen again) that the people who show up will be there in support to this issue and not just worried about their face in this current election.

I have a few predictions after pondering these pages that are reminiscent of poorly organized rallies and tempestuous gatherings that typically include chants that begin with :”Hey Hey – ho ho …. ” you fill in the penultimate part and end with “…gotta go.” This blog is so fringe and riddled with here say with an overt agenda that just reeks with bad process that it has become beyond dysfunctional. To that end I predict:

    1. You won’t find Ben posting here anymore – his last post establishes a new epoch of the high road and you have no defense to that because the facts are seemingly a distorted blur of text.

    2. Each of the 4 key targets that have suffered attack here have actually benefited from the negative publicity over the past month and will be re-elected.

    3. After the 25th of Oct – this website will return to a new level of irrelevance now having completed it’s mandate of not helping the handful of carefully selected candidates on their tasks. However you still have one week left to completely ignore the abyss of the internet and get out there and hit the street – that is where the election is won and lost.

    4. I was right 7.5 out of 8 predictions last time – 4 years ago …

    Best of luck –

“I still to this day don’t understand the level of hatred you feel towards me”

There is a reason a certain level of hatred is called”Blind Hate”.
It doesn’t require justification or sensible logic to feed it.
She disagrees with positions you (and of course, the others who happened to vote the same way) have taken on issues.
Because you engage her on some of these, you are her easy target.
Common sense or potential for another perspective, or rational balance on whatever the issue may be does not enter the equation.
I suspect if you were to acknowledge that you put your left sock on before your right one each morning, she would find a mean, sneering and cutting way to question your motive.
Responsible, “Fact Driven Given and Take” that recognize the validity of other considerations won’t happen.

  37. jhoward@rogers.com'
Jim Howard October 19, 2010 at 9:38 am

Long before Drayton was an inkling in anyones’ eye we bought and still own a property not far from the intended site.
Subsequent to that purchase I actively encouraged the concept of a major Live Theatre facility in Cambridge and specifically suggested a couple of sites.

You may recall the following that is copied from a discussion paper that was shared with you and others through the Cambridge Advocate some time ago.

“Why does Cambridge not attract the steady, year round business and private crowds? Perhaps there is a perception that this is a regressive, single focus community?
Some might point to demographic differences.
I don’t believe that is the answer either.
Rather, answers lay somewhere within the reality that if one does come to Cambridge for dinner or shopping, there are insufficient choices as to where they can go afterwards or before.
There isn’t anything close to a Mirvish, Thompson Hall, Hummingbird quality theatre and/or symphony facility. What if we had a stunning theatre like one of those here?
Perhaps situated “over the water at Riverside Park or Dickson Park?
    Would it survive?

My point when directing the entire paper , inclusive of this suggestion, to my ward councilor, Ben Tucci, at the time in 2006 was and remains..
If Cambridge is to have the capacity to service its infrastructure needs and social service requirements, it absolutely must “Expand its tax base” .
Short of developing non-tax revenue streams including tax based funds that come from other levels of government, Cambridge will continue to have an “outflow of money/other resources to other communities” at the expense of its existing business community.

So, while it is none of your business where I own property and I anticipate you will attach your own breed of values as to where they are located or why I support “Drayton” the answer to your direct question is:
Yes, I do own a property by the Grand, though it is not where I live..
Whether it will be negatively or positively affected by evolving local real estate conditions in that part of the city remains to be seen, but if all goes well, theatre nearby will enhance its value.
That could be considered something akin to :
Will my property value increase or decrease if a school or a recreation centre or any other major service facility/structure is built in the vicinity of a property one has purchased.
You are a real estate sales representativeand and you know there is not a magic formula that defines which elements will specifically impact pricing.
Certainly, a broad positive perception of a community tends to increase both property values and its allure for industry(job creating)/ families coming from other areas.

  38. Debbie Duff Vitez October 19, 2010 at 10:06 am

Jim Howard October 19, 2010 at 11:27 am

    Hello agm.
No, I wasn’t at the landlord rally.
My earlier comment was in reference to the on-going barbs that fly relative to Ben Tucci, rather than that particular incident.
I was sitting with Ms.Andrade and a Councilor candidate a few days earlier when she very clearly outlined her concerns and asked for support from that candidate.

I find it very difficult/complex to decide just how that issue should be decided. She certainly presents valid arguments.
On the other hand, there is a serious question with respect to how far should a municipality go to cover costs that one party or another (in this case landlords) are unable to recover.
The potential water cost absorption is only a possible few dollars per annum in ratepayer increase, but it could set a dangerous precedent.

As for the incident at city hall , I am as much in the dark as most people and suspect full details or context will not come out here.

Jim Howard October 19, 2010 at 3:39 pm

    Hello Jesika Fillier;

No, I am not a candidate for any capacity though I have been asked, “Why not” from a number of people who are in the running.
The answer to “Why Not” is:
I strongly believe our elected representatives are severely restricted by the structure of council to adequately address the many matters they are expected to address/resolve.
The personal commitment is immense, so whether I agree or disagree with any sitting councilor and all who are new candidates, I deeply respect what they are potentially cutting out of their personal lives to attend to their responsibilities..

What I have done during this campaign is share concerns and ideas with every municipal candidate (Mayor and Councilors) along with some regional council candidates and other municipally active/concerned people.

Happily, I have had the opportunity to meet personally for in-depth discussions with many candidates (most wards) and am encouraged by the insight and qualities they bring with them. .

Unfortunately, because I happen to value his research capabilites and what I regard as “his Progressive Thinking,” I haven’t had a chance to actually get together with my “friend Tucci”.
At least not yet, though we have spoken a few times and I certainly endorse his candidacy.

As for “running bhind the scenes” as suggested by D. Vitez, I’m not sure how anyone would do that. To the best of my knowledge there is not a “Write In Option” on the ballots.
What I would like to see is: Municipal Initiative Planning and Funding Forums created.
If they were established I would definitely participate.

Where do I start? Well Agm you do not seem to have a clue about what you are talking about, you assume alot though, Jesika you are also making assumptions and you have no basis for what you are talking about, and for you Miss Vitez are you sure, Are You absolutely Sure there is no business plan for Drayton, at the Mayoral debate Linda did not call Doug on it when Doug held it up in front of here face and said she and all members of council had seen it, So Miss Vitez once again I ask you, Are You Sure there is no business plan or is it just another assumption? Miss Vitez what people do not like in this city is your lies and hatred and dirty politics and the way you treat posters on here, I truly believe you are hurting the candidates you are supporting by your hateful actions and therefore they will be penalized on Election Day, Shame on you.

Randy Greggs …Burr under your saddle or what!!!
    …you wrote…
“Miss Vitez what people do not like in this city is your lies and hatred and dirty politics and the way you treat posters on here…”

You seem to have designated yourself a spokesperson for “those people” that do not like what they read on Miss Vitez’s blog; so perhaps you should ride your high horse over to those people and simply instruct them not to read it….problem solved!

Randy Greggs: As per your post #46 you are right. I assume a lot; such as although you didn’t answer my post #36 , I assume that you weren’t present at the rally.

So m bollard seems like you condone Miss Vitez’s behavior well shame on you too and for you Agm you are correct I was not there , so what you are saying is it is ok for you to give an opinion on things you know very little about but as soon as someone else gives their opinion you have to shoot your mouth off hmm double standard or what, the truth is Agm I had a very good friend there who seen quite abit and I was informed that you, Miss vitez and the people you support and your other henchmen and women were there ONLY to attack and to cast more hatred, Agm I assure you I will be riding my high horse on Election day and the candidates that you and Miss Vitez support can give you both a Big Thank you for their Loss, so unfair.

Hey Brad Handleman, please notice that I took the effort to spell your name correctly!! I call them as I see them. If its childish to reveal the truth, so be it. A word of advice when you see a comment from me, you have the choice to read it or not.
    A pleasant day to you

What’s the matter Randy, can’t add your real name or email address?..

Easy to slam people when you’re hiding!!!.
You can say what you want about me, but I don’t hide behind a fake name.

In my opinion you’re spineless.. The good people of Cambridge will vote for whom they want.
People have been reading this site for the past 2 years now and know why I’m here.

To expose dirty water, soil , air… and dirty dirty politicians.. It’s my hope that your candidates don’t get re-elected. The public knows I am not lying about who is running their city, I have proven it over and over again.. You have yet to back any of your claims, or discount mine. I have no financial gain here. Do you?

** All email address’ will be checked, if they are not valid your comment will be deleted**
and you will be exposed… That should clean up a whole bunch of garbage..

‘riding a high horse’ is an old English idiom that came about from nobility riding around on their tall perfect steeds looking down their noses at the peasants below.
    (softer definition):
“When someone is on their high horse, they are being inflexible, arrogant and will not make any compromises.”

Bravo Bravo m. as long as you intend to evoke contemptuous laughter at me someone else is being left alone also It must be frustrating when you know all the answers, but nobody bothers to ask you the questions. Miss Vitez you are correct I am having a hard time accessing my email as well, I have asked hotmail for help it looks like someone may have tried to hack into my email hmm or maybe not, but you can do what you like if you stop me from posting on here because I am hitting nerves then I will post on other sites either way you are in control , God knows you have proved that. Since you are attacking my character I must say my feelings have been hurt but not nearly the kind of hurt Jane Liggit and Linda Whetham will feel on Election Day because of you and ” your” Haters in my opinion have Lost Votes for both these candidates because Voters truly believe that if they were to be elected you and your team of Henchmen and Women in my opinion will be driving the ship just as you are all doing now and that my friend is the perception of many voters I have been able to touch base with. You wanted the Truth.. You got it.. I am not here to back claims and to discount your lies in my opinion, I am here to give my own personal opinion which by the way has turned out to be the opinion of many many voters in our great city. So Miss Vitez, m.bollard and agm go ahead continue on with your attacks of hatred and bold lies in my opinion but after election day you all should reflect back at your hateful propaganda and bow your heads in shame.

“So Miss Vitez, m.bollard and agm go ahead continue on with your attacks of hatred and bold lies in my opinion but after election day you all should reflect back at your hateful propaganda and bow your heads in shame.”

I have commented 2ce on this post (of 57 comments) and both times it was in regards to your going over the top with your comments. I bear no hatred towards you…I have told no lies…I have spread no propaganda (hateful or otherwise), and I do not intend to bow my head in shame, as I have done nothing.

You sir need to practice what you preach. Know the difference between giving opinions and passing judgement. You are far too busy pointing fingers on that high horse of yours.

“Attacks of hatred and bold lies”, “hateful propaganda” Well m.boilard you and I are at least as guilty as each other. I may possibly be even twice as guilty as you. Mr. Greggs wasn’t at the rally nor were we. His opinions as I dared suggest earlier are very strong despite his non presence. His “very good friend” however was present and was seeing things as I most certainly wasn’t there. Other commenters who were present don’t share his opinion. To date I don’t believe anyone who was present has posted to deny Ben Tucci’s statement to Linda Whetham (full of ….). Mr. Tucci himself commented here and did not deny that statement. Obviously he must have been upset, angry, frustrated etc. to make that comment and I assume (sorry Gregg) that is not his usual behaviour. Therefore based on the facts clearly Mr. Greggs has won this argument. I’m overmatched and I concede to the superior moral and intellectual wisdom of Mr. Greggs.

  60. Debbie Duff Vitez October 20, 2010 at 8:10 am

He Mentions Jan Liggett running against Tucci.
He Mentions Linda Whetham running against the Mayor
as people I support …no mention of the other 6 I openly support…

Desperate wishful thinking on his part, that these people are going to lose this election.
A bit of panic setting in me thinks.

    The MAYOR was absent..
Ben was there.. YOU DO THE MATH..

    Randy again I ask:
