” he doeth protest too loudly”

Fears about city website ‘hack’ overblown

OpinionApr 12, 2018Cambridge Times

I would like to respond to Ken Tuckey’s April 2 letter to the editor about cybersecurity, in which he suggests the city should reconsider offering an online voting option and insinuates the City of Cambridge did not disclose a recent and brief incident involving the city’s website.

The city introduced electronic voting during the last election to make voting more accessible for electors. This is not about “brand management” but about making it easier for a higher number of residents, including the elderly or disabled, to participate in the democratic process.

I believe Tuckey is trying to spread fear. The city website was not hacked, as he stated. Rather, a popular third party app called Browesaloud, which enables visually challenged people to access information, was compromised.

The Browsealoud app was removed from our site. There was no attempt to access customer data, no customer action required, and the software has not been replaced on our site.

City staff are committed to openness and transparency. Our chief information officer conducted several media interviews on the topic and was more than happy to share information about our security measures.

I would like to assure residents that cyber-safety is always top of mind.

Doug Craig

Mayor of Cambridge

editors note..

I believe Tuckey is trying to spread fear”

And the voting public believe, this mayor is gambling with our democratic rights to a safe and secure election.

Why is that Mr. Craig?

Mr. Craig may I ask you directly why you would say the Mr. Tuckey insinuates that the City of Cambridge did not disclose the brief incident regarding the City’s Website????
Right on the You Tube stream of the Council Meeting of March 27 at 2:22:08 where Aleksander Essex states that he brought this hack to the attention of the media.
Had Mr. Essex not done so, the residents of this City would never have known a ‘Hack’ let’s tell it like it is … it was a ‘Hack’ do not call it something else.

You also state here that online voting makes it easier for a higher number of residents including the elderly and disabled to participate in the Democratic process.. Can you show me proof Mr. Mayor??

Ken Tuckey says it the way it is. He is spreading honesty – not fear!
Re the Mayor’s 2nd paragraph – Seniors could not vote because the Mayor closed up Polling stations in Seniors homes & many others around the city.
Seniors don’t vote online – Mayor – they don’t have a computer in the Homes therefore you eliminated a lot of voters by what you did – ridiculous.
And you closed up so many Polling stations across the City – that people who were lined up to vote were turned away as they shut the doors before they could get in. Ridiculous Mayor. You don’t have a clue how people live or vote!!
And if Cyber-safety was top of mind – you would know it is not a safe way to hold an Election. Did you not listen to Alexsander Nesser? I know you were ticked off – why because he knew what he was talking about – you do not!!
As a Senior, and a voter – I want to put my vote on a paper ballot – place it in a box where it will not disappear or grow. What can’t you understand??
By the way the last Election was held – it was criminal the number of people you eliminated from voting – closed stations – (approx. reduced from 250 to 50?)- no voting cards – closed stations in Senior Homes – shutting the doors while people were lined up due to inefficiencies of the way the Election was held.
I don’t know what you want to call the “hacking” – but it was “hacking”- got it?
I’d believe anything Ken Tuckey has to say! No fear – just good plain honesty!

It’s called “Damage Control”. Governments do it all the time. Fill the media with lies and let your version get out as the truth. As for Doug, Strange the city manager didn’t sign his name to the letter or a letter. Nope, Doug wants press as any way he can get it. This just shows how important online voting is to his re-election. No mention of saying I can’t believe it or being pissed or allowing Bush to confront Alex. This is right out of the book on bullshit and bullying. I can tell you straight up that Ken is an honest man that is worthy. Doug is nervous.

“Damage Control” – Craig is damaged. He is afraid to admit the truth.
Watching the Mar. 27th video – did you notice Bush being sent an email to “attack” – I wonder who it came from – two choices at the front. That was disgusting – to send a City employee to attack a Speaker.
I guess the Speaker spoke the truth and Craig can’t stand that – someone else knowing more than him & being honest about it. And of course – in opposition to his opinion. Talk about fear – Craig is sending off these vibes!
Shame on whoever sent Bush out to “attack” – what kind of people do we have at City Hall. Shame Shame on them.
It looks like Craig did not like the vote going against him to allow this Speaker – so now he sends attack dogs. Too bad he wasn’t listening & learning. His Councillors – all but one – wanted to listen & learn. So there is hope!
People watch the Mar. 27th Video – very interesting actions by employees.

  5. Terry Mc Allister April 13, 2018 at 4:13 pm

Spin it any way you want to but a ‘hack’ is a ‘hack’ and the City Website was compromised on February 11. It was Aleksander Essex that exposed this to the press and you can hear that on the YouTube video March 27 Council Meeting. If he had not reported it to the press it would have been swept under the carpet…What else has this City done that it does not want the residents to know about?
I find it ‘convenient’ that the Chief Information Officer is going to do a presentation before Council on Tuesday April 17. So its just another move to make the public think that the internet is ‘safe.’
Tell me do you think we have all fallen off the turnip truck?
And the part that electronic voting makes voting more accessible for the election and that its about making it easier for a higher number of residents including the elderly and disabled to participate in the democratic process. What kind of hogwash is that? Most Seniors I know want no part of a computer and they prefer to go to a polling station like they have done all their lives. Can you prove that having online voting increases the number of voters? I can answer that for you in just one word…No!! And I’m not and IT professional!!!

    Questions April 13, 2018 at 4:28 pm

So someone explain – when is a “Hack” not a “hack”?
Why is Craig picking on Mr. Tuckey – who is a very honest upfront man.
And is the fear Craig mentioned coming from him? Fear for what – Cambridge people finding out the truth?
I understand a speaker on Mar.27th was verbally attacked by City staff outside Council chambers. Who sent them? And why? Is Craig getting nervous?
Craig & 1 Councillor, Donna Reid voted against him speaking, but all the rest wanted to listen to him & learn. hmmmmm – interesting isn’t this??
Definitely time to return to paper ballots – return the voting stations so people can vote. Was shutting down stations in certain areas so only certain votes happened? hmmmmm
Gee so many questions. Hope the answers are forthcoming soon.
Another speaker at City Hall had asked for Security protection and then this attack on a speaker from out of town – just what is going on at City Hall???
Talk about “fear” – people will be afraid to attend Council meetings.

  7. Very Interested April 13, 2018 at 6:32 pm

I believe Tuckey is trying to spread fear??? Fear of what Mr. Mayor?? Maybe it is fear of City Officials when they come to Council Meetings?
Guest speakers getting Bullied by members of staff!! That’s right !! It was totally deplorable and that kind of thing should never ever happen but it did…so what exactly does that say about City Staff Members??

  8. mjqsmith@bell.net'
    Fearful April 13, 2018 at 8:07 pm

Gee if there is any “fear” in Cambridge – it is the “fear” that Craig will get back in for another term. Oh, no! Will we have any money left for his mega useless projects – like the Theatre with no parking, the Bridge to no-where, the useless sign at City Hall that no one sees, the old post office – paid too much – repair costing mega money, it just goes on & on. And the drug issue that Mr. Vann had to point out to him & the needles all over parks, etc. Fear – you bet!
So talk about “fear” – you bet this is the fear of Cambridge Taxpayers.
Our streets are rotten, infrastructure a mess, need bike trails around the City,
etc. etc. – yes Craig – we have fear!!

  9. Heard it Loud and Clear April 14, 2018 at 6:57 am

Yes the residents of this City should be fearful..We have a Mayor that needs some Anger Management Courses. If you watch the body language of the Mayor on the March 27 You Tube Stream of the Council meeting you can see he is angry. Wonder who he is angry with? The Councillors that voted in favour of letting Aleksander Essex speak on the topic of Cybersecurity and Internet Voting? The fact that a resident of the City would actually be concerned enough about the City Website ‘Hack’..Yes Mayor Craig it was indeed a ‘hack’..even a professional Cybersecurity expert confirmed it..
If you listen carefully to the Council Meeting, after Mr. Essex is dismissed and Mayor Craig wants to get back to the other business you can hear him say ‘next item before I hit the roof.’ The Mayor of our City uttered these words??
What does that say about him???

  10. Heard it Loud and Clear April 14, 2018 at 10:33 am

I find it very interesting that our Mayor responded to the letter by Ken Tuckey.
Guess Mr. Tuckey must have hit a nerve.
And by the way a ‘hack’ is a ‘hack’ not matter how you want to say it wasn’t
    Even Aleksander Essex said so

Wasteful Spending Doug Craig is trying to dumb down the vote and of course also trying to appeal to the seniors who can not get out to vote. This is cleaver but it will not work as the “PEOPLE” are smarter than Doug Craig.

First, “Dump Down The Vote” and what does that mean. Doug Craig is hunting for uneducated and poor people to navigate them to vote for him. This might entail show them how to vote online and then suggest a familiar candidate to vote for as mayor. I am certain his minions will be out to complete that mission.

Second mission will be the seniors. This will entail some cleaver education of his minions but I am certain Doug Craig will succeed. Doug Craig will bring computers into the senior’s homes and again will suggest what candidates these seniors might what to vote for and of course brainwash them to think that Doug Craig has made their lives better in the past 4 years which, of course, is not true.

Doug Craig reminds me of a bucket of worms, it is just so hard to grasp the bad ones and get rid of them

    Wishing April 14, 2018 at 2:37 pm

Hey we need someone good to run for Mayor. Why don’t you sign up Vincent.
People are afraid of what Craig will do next if he gets in again with the internet voting which he is pushing & created a disaster in 2014 – with all the Polling stations closed & Senior Homes excluded as he knows the Seniors do like to vote & he probably knew they had enough sense not to vote for him.
So sign up Vincent. We need a good candidate to run.
In the meantime Craig is instilling fear in to anyone that objects to his way at Council & he sends his people to threaten them.
Just make sure you have a good security backup when you run or speak at Council.

  13. Reader April 14, 2018 at 4:16 pm

Mayor Craig says the City Website was not hacked..Aleksander Essex was the one who exposed the ‘hack’ to the press…so tell me who is telling the truth here?

  14. Reader April 15, 2018 at 11:59 am

So the Mayor thinks the City website ‘hack’ is overblown.
Anytime a website has been threatened in any way even by a third party this is serious and it is not overblown like we are being lead to think
If someone had ‘hacked’ into your bank account for example and just took out enough for a coffee and donut would you be upset? Of course you would and you would want to stop that from ever happening again.
But unfortunately when you deal with the internet nothing is secure and no matter what type of ‘hack’ is done it is serious!!

  15. Reader April 16, 2018 at 9:48 am

There is a Counci Meeting tomorrow evening and the City’s Chief Information Officer will be addressing the security regarding the City Website.
He will try to lead everyone to believe that the compromise that took place in February was nothing..well maybe to the City it’s nothing but to the Citizen this is a big deal.
This means that no matter what this fellow wants to tell us regarding internet security and how safe it might be..its a proven fact that the internet cant be compromised at any time by lots of ways.
So do we want to risk that when it comes to the election?
Oh I forgot…Putin would not want to ‘hack’ our election…but let’s listen to what a professional has to say on that issue..
How could this Council have been so nonchalant regarding our democratic right?

l agree! Vincent for Mayor! Who better than someone that dislikes him. Add up all that dislike the mayor and you have a new mayor. l would donate to your campaign as l did to Mr. Vamn.

  17. Cautious April 16, 2018 at 11:51 am

Randy I agree with you..Vincent for Mayor…I will donate as well..
Maybe then we will have a Mayor that uses his head for more than keeping his ears apart??

Gee – we could use someone like her for our new Mayor.
We could stand someone with good values & the Taxpayer valued & respected.
Maybe we could get some things done in Cambridge that need to be done – not high rises & Bridges to nowhere.
Let’s hope there is this person out there ready to run & fight for us!

Went to vote at a secure location for the Provincial election. No internet voting, no phone in voting, only paper ballots. This election is being done right and our mayor and council should take note. Of course to stay elected we understand the reason for “their” choice. The woman that was to run for mayor will not risk the investment because of the method of voting being used stating “too many flags of error”. Not listening to the public outcry is just not how things are done in Cambridge. Wow! Gary Price is running out of his ward even though he got the Price bump to keep his area in ward 6 for the 2010 election. Scared he can’t beat Adshade I guess. Looks open for ward 1 or 6 for me still now I have the go ahead. Why would Price do this? I bet I know why or who helped. Good grief, we can’t let him get elected right DEX.

I would love to have Ben run for mayor. I always liked him and he was always approachable. He came to my mothers funeral and showed respect. I hope he considers it Vincent.
