Time for a New Mayor

Doug Craig has been mayor in Cambridge now for too long and what has he really done for the City of Cambridge?

From my point of view, not that much at all. Sure we have another footbridge across the Grand River at $1.4 million but we did not need it when the other 3 bridges would have done quite well so that was a waste of taxpayers’ money.

Next Doug Craig had the not so bright idea to construct a sign in front of the city hall with the city of Cambridge on it. Really, is Doug Craig that juvenile and childish that this would bring people downtown Galt to shop? If you have not had the chance go to downtown Galt well you are not missing that much, why, because there is nothing there to miss. Downtown Galt is a ghost town of closed stores and few pedestrians walking around.

Doug Craig next would claim he is in the final stages of wrapping up the Multiplex deal with the Cambridge Mall. That is only partly true, originally Doug Craig wanted to have the Multiplex way out at the Conestoga college location.

I thought about that for a while and even checked on the map just wondering where it was and then I saw it was way out by the 401 Highway near Kitchener.

Now just why would you insist on the Multiplex being built there?

Is it possible there was sort of deal that we did not know about or is Doug Craig is just not in touch with the residents of Cambridge?

The other question you just have to ask yourself is why is the City of Cambridge spending your hard earned tax dollars for a Sportsplex?

What does this have to do with the city at all?

Doesn’t a project like this belong to private enterprise develop?

I resent Doug Craig spending my property tax money on a project like this; again he has no new ideas how to bring back a downtown which is for all purposes dead.

Now the punch line,  has he killed it with his poor decisions over the past 18 years?

Now would you even want someone like that running your city for another 4 years? I sure wouldn’t!

The GO Train in Cambridge has been talked about for the past 15 years and year after year nothing was done.

Then finally last year the provincial government announced an expansion of the GO service.

When I heard we did not get it I contacted Doug Craig and asked him what happened?

He said we did not get it and said we would try again. Well, Kitchener got one and even Courtice gets one but not Cambridge.

What is the problem with Doug Craig? Just why is he not up to the job for a GO Train in Cambridge?

Then in the Cambridge Times, we see his desk with a little GO Train on it like a little baby, poor little Doug!

Either do your job or the residents of Cambridge will find someone else to do it for you.

As many of your readers will be well aware a provincial election will be called for this June, that being said the Liberals would have to win for Cambridge to even have a chance of even getting the GO Service and at that it will not happen after 2024 which is about the time frame Kitchener will finally get their GO Train.

So that is another 6 years away for Kitchener and therefore it would easily be another 5 to 10 years for Cambridge.

Either way, Doug Craig has had 15 to 20 years to properly plan for the GO Train and hasn’t, so now is the time for someone else to replace him.

Doug Craig is simply not up to the job in any sense of the word!

Wow – you said it all!! No we do not want this Mayor back in. Need fresh blood. He is in a rut – a self-centred rut. Spends money where it isn’t needed. I know, the Times said he only has one vote – BUT when you are a controlling freak – he indirectly has more than 1 vote. He was good first term. What happened? Himself – that is what happened. Stuck on himself.
He wastes money – left & right – Preston needs a new dam – for 9 years now – but oh no he’d rather waste our money on the many items you mentioned. And we needed a Bypass years ago & a Go Train definitely. Cannot keep widening 401.
And yes the Sports Complex could be done private or some private support – we have had so many good proposals – but his empty brain is stuck on Conestoga which is the DUMBEST move ever. But he made a promise to Conestoga – really$$$
We have had a decent proposal by a private company to build 2 rinks & save the City 12 million – and he has been treated rudely – too bad – he knows his business – it is the Ice Park. We don’t need 4 rinks. 2 would be great!
The Acquatics at the Flea Market across from the Y who want to work with this concept. The Mall – build Condos there. Lots of good ideas!!
This Mayor just loves to get people in – but not out. There is no money in building more & more homes. We need business for jobs & tax dollars.
We can go on & on – but we pray for a decent opposition in our 2018 Election and
Yes – we have to get him out. Everyone I speak to – never voted for him – so therefore internet voting has been fixed as we know it can be.
So VOTERS VOTE PAPER BALLOTS so your vote goes to the right person – a new one!!

The Cambridge Times article, that was me. As for the Conestoga location for the Sports Complex, I think that Doug Craig and city council had some sort of backroom deal set-up because why would you ever build it way out there where the buses hardly ever run and it is just too far to go.

The City of Cambridge should just focus on infrastructure, more outdoor activities such as public tennis courts and bike trails. They should ok more building in the old Downtown such as Condos as that would attract retailers.

When I was a kid living in London, Ontario the downtown used to be alive with all sorts of retail stores, movie theatres, hotels and Bar & Gills. Now it looks like a Ghosttown with lots of drug dealing and “CLOSED STORES”. So you have to ask yourself, what has happened? From my point of view, the answer is simple, Doug Craig and his council of clowns.

So I can only hope you are upset enough to talk to your friends and family and get out there in Oct of 2018 and “VOTE”.

Good evening. I don’t agree with a total private enterprise doing the Multiplex deal. I feel it should have some city involvement. I am of the belief that the college would be a huge mistake for the people of Cambridge and the business community in general. The savings in the short term will be regretted in the long term. We have a Chamber of Commerce voice in our city yet it has remained silent throughout this business venture. Missing out years ago on the Go train close to the 401 so both Cambridge and Kitchener access could be shared has been a bungled affair by our combined governments. My support for a new mayor comes from the misadventures Doug Craig repeatedly comes up with regarding the spending of our tax dollars on what looks like legacy projects for his Galt friends. It is time for this man to leave already.

I could not agree more with a new mayor Doug Craig performance has been horrible and misdirected at best. A GO Train would have been great for the troubled city like Cambridge. But I really don’t see it coming here for at least another 10 to 15 years at best. That is because the politics just does not react fast enough to public demand. As for the Chamber of Commerce, they are a business lobby only looking out for their own interest so I am certain they have no interest in the GO Train as there is nothing in it for them. You saw how fast they reacted to the new wage hikes, that is their own interest being looked after.

So I can only hope you are upset enough to talk to your friends and family and get out there in Oct of 2018 and “VOTE”.

Some good points here. I really don’t see us getting the GO Train. It’s a plus having Kathryn here but I liked the idea of a 401 area station for both cities. As for the mayor, after what I saw during the 2010 election here only one person is to be blamed in my world Doug. People in Preston and Hespeler are not getting equal distribution of projects from tax dollars. He helped wanted the college to get the multiplex and that seems clear. Frank was hung out to dry on that one. They helped eliminate the Ice Park and the Mall is smoke and mirrors to me. The by pass for Cambridge would have eliminated pet projects for certain people. The bridge we just built was not needed for walkers being a block away both sides are other bridges. This is about parking for the Theater and Gaslight. I can see a parking garage going in on water street. Yet another project for Galt. This mayor has alienated the rest of Cambridge and most just sit back and allow it. It will be a terrible blow to watch another manipulated election. As I stated in the past a tax or excessive water bills have been put in place and more increases are on the way to repair our underground water routes to and from locations. Pet projects came 1st which took needed cash for repairs. Thanks mayor and puppets for putting us behind the 8 ball. Your water bill has extras on it now but an infrastructure tax increase is coming. With council like Shannon, Donna, Mann, Pam and Frank voting so often along the Doug line a bump is coming. I have said often that this is the worst council we have ever had, and feel new clean blood is needed. We need to blow up the follow the lead duck express. People only ask for honest, and fair minded council. In my window I see that coming often from Liggett, Nic, and Devine. I can only see changes coming through a honest election which I don’t think we will have here in OZ. Killing machine elections needs to be replaced. Death by a thousand cuts people.

Sounds about right Sarah. Local coffee shops are buzzing about Frank and Mike M. They are called Mutt and Jeff. I try not to get involved in vial conversation about these two. Perhaps I will run in Preston now as it looks open. I will enter late somewhere to keep them guessing. Mike Mann is in the PC party I hear. Looks like his days in politics are over. Why the heck is Truedoe allowing the clown in the chair to stay. Wrong choice PM.

I think it’s time for a lot of new blood at City Council..Major Craig has been in his position way too long and here is where maybe the idea of two terms maximum for a Mayor and then if they want to run again they have to be away from the position for two terms..It would allow for different perspectives and new ideas to come forth from the great walls of City Hall. As for Councillors, I would say three terms maximum and if they want to run again they have to be out for at least one term…Sort of along the lines of the American Voting System. Change can be good.
Now all we have to do is get the VOTERS out on ELECTION day in OCTOBER to help with those decisions.

Wow – Vincent – did you see the new City Sign? At City Hall. Wow $48,000. or was it $77,400.? for this sign that no one but employees will see. Really – spend all this money on a sign when people are struggling$$ Oh, not the Firemen or Police – with their big raise & all the retention, etc. etc. This City is sure making it hard for all the low-income people. Guess the Mayor wants these poor people out of town.
But gee, the sign lights up. Whoopee!! So more hydro for us to pay for.
Now who made the sign? A local company like Pride? Or out-of-town? We need to find out these details. Need details on this.
ELECTION coming – sure hope someone decent & honest will run against Craig. Need change. Enough of this spending – spending on USELESS ITEMS.
Then they make a big show of trying to balance the budget – who is kidding who?
Detail the LRT to Cambridge & get going on a GO TRAIN – 20 YRS. OVERDUE!!!!

    • svbenjamin.1956@gmail.com'
Vincent Benjamin February 6, 2018 at 11:24 pm

From my understanding that sign you spoke about costs $48,000 + the hydro costs to light it up each night forever…

My understanding about the LRT is it will only go to the Cambridge Mall so god knows how much over budget that will be

So I can only hope you are upset enough to talk to your friends and family and get out there in Oct of 2018 and “VOTE”

TICKED OFF!!! February 7, 2018 at 6:35 am

I find it enlightening (pun intended) that the City of Cambridge spent 48K on a PERMANENT sign for the downtown core of the City. I guess this was a project to put the focus once again on the downtown core. We must ask just how much ‘traffic flow’ of people will this really attract. Are our tax dollars being spent wisely or is this just another WANT for the downtown?
There are so many things this City does that comes to ‘LIGHT’ after the fact. I think it is time the residents of this city get more VOCAL about the spending of THEIR MONEY rather than leaving this up to member of council when asked to vote on projects and VOTE BECAUSE STAFF RECOMMENDS IT!!!
This 2018 Municipal Election could be a game changer..Get rid of ex cops and teachers and maybe the spending habits of council will change. NOT EVERYONE IN THIS CITY HAVE HEFTY PENSIONS!!!

This area will be celebrating STOP BULLYING on February 28th. There are t-shirts on sale at various venues throughout Waterloo Region and I encourage everyone to spend the $10. and go out and invest in one.
My suggestion is that at the regular Council Meeting on February 20th, the public shows up wearing these shirts into Council.
It would be one way for the residents of this City to show Council that we will no longer be BULLIED by them. We do have some members that are truly BULLIES and it was even mentioned by someone a long time ago who is mentally challenged. If someone like that can recognize a BULLY on Council, what does that say about them? It tells me that this person is not MENTALLY CHALLENGED, rather this person has a BETTER PERCEPTION of understanding.

So come out one and all on February 20th and wear your Pink Shirt with PRIDE!! If you believe that we need to stop bullying, then let’s have it start with our MUNICIPAL OFFICIALS…

I see the puppets are taking a run at Vincent Benjamin. Sour grapes from Galt where most tax dollars for legacy projects go. I heard one is a fireman. Go figure, at 100 grand + a year and 24 hour shifts, of course he supports Doug. Firemen were burning my election signs out back in 2010 that were stolen nothing was done after complaints. How much money gets spent each year by city hall with their surveillance team? Combing the web for a self serving agenda. Big brother watching our every move. Deb, most knew from the start what pooperoo was up to. I found it funny. As Ben took a shot at Doug and his agenda it shows that some Galt people don’t want candy funds to slow down. Doug has split this city into 2 areas. Galt, and the rest. Notice where he now lives. It is a ticking time bomb here in Preston. The merchants are pissed and despise Doug. We were at a restaurant in Preston last week and every single senior at the tables said something negative about him and the lack of spending in Preston. The damn topic was toxic. Then Mann and Monterio was brought up and nasty things were said. Worst council ever, period. Vincent Benjamin should run for council. We need to rid city hall of Dyke for the people. OOPPS. I’m being monitored. I take it all back. Where’s the damn at mayor?

Tom thanks for the comment. I really appreciate it. If I was a good public speaker I would love to run. So I do not want to embarrass myself. What I would love to do is to get behind someone who is just as pissed-off as I am about Doug Craig as he is just a weasel. Who needs to be thrown out of office in the worst way.

The Cambridge Times has turned out to be a mouthpiece for Doug Craig as the staff never say anything critical about this deadbeat as he lacks any backbone all.

Keep up the discussion we need this angry to get through until the election when it will really count.

Vincent – re Times letter tonight – must be Craig’s friend. Or he lives out-of-town & does not know what is going on in Cambridge. We all know the downtown is a disaster as Craig directs our Tax dollars to his projects. He had to be bullied into paying attention to the drug problem – but too late. There is Preston with the best wide street in town & we hear they are removing parking – why?? Do they want Preston downtown to die also?? And a center median? This is nuts. JUST REBUILD THEIR DAM & FORGET ALL THIS OTHER NONSENSE. Craig doesn’t do anything sensible – just his belt notching projects – like the BRIDGE TO NOWHERE. What this money could have done. We know you are right about Craig. At least he could have put the Cambridge sign where people could see it. Like on Hespeler Rd. – the main part of Cambridge. He just doesn’t get it.
Hopefully the rest of the City residents will wake up before Oct. ELECTION$$$$$

I live in Cambridge so I do not know what you are talking about. Doug Craig has really messed this city up. The Cambridge Mall is being revised and Kitchener is having new construction. So what is wrong with Cambridge? That is Doug Craig he has lost his mind and waste money on that bridge and the sign. 2018 I am sure he will waste even more money or maybe not because it is an election year so he will have a low profile until October.

If you want 4 more years of this nut then re-elect him. But do not me when he starts acting nuts again.

The mistakes the city makes weekly are out of hand. We need to reduce our firemen numbers. 6 out of every 10 dollars in taxes goes to them it says. Vincent said it right, Downtown Galt is a ghetto and we still keep dumping our money into a pit. It was a good letter they did not like.
