This horror story came to me from a Widowed lady who is struggling with this large water bill.. and the horrific treatment she suffered at the hands of the bullies running the water department at Cambridge City Hall..  The email showed Mayor Craig was notified of her concerns.. as he was CC’d in her email, he opted to do NOTHING…

This  Mayor is fully aware of what is going on and what has gone on for the past 4 years and has done nothing to rectify the problem..

** It saddens me to say”

The person who originally wanted help and sent me the email concerning her outlandish bill, has  now requested I remove them.

I have done as you requested..

I firmly believe that by posting them in the first place, it prompted some serious discussion and I thank you for starting the ball rolling..

It’s my firm belief that YOUR BILL will now be rectified.. and that no other person in Cambridge will have to suffer any more abuse from this so called Water Department…

I don’t think you understand how much good you did by providing them in the first place.. Debbie

Welcome R. Whittaker… it’s not just the equipment that is malfunctioning, its the entire staff.. starting with the Mayor, as you can plainly see he is fully aware and doesn’t care.. this has been going on for 4 full years.. how many more people are paying these bills?.. I hear plenty caved to the rude behaviour and threats of increased tax bills that they felt forced to pay up..

They have been screwing us for a long time! Even though only two of us live here, and our routine is the same ( we are in our 60’s) our water bill went from $110.00 to $287.00 to $ 181.00. When I called, they basically said tough shit!

Does anybody have any knowledge of this type of billing elsewhere? I wouldn’t have a clue what to do if we had this expense happen. So does this mean Craig will act on the overbilling?

No. Give a call to Mike Parsons at public works. He’ll explain the process but doesn’t that’s about all.

Forgot to mention. One leaking toilet running for an entire billing period will cost you some 700 extra dollars at current water rates. A water softener running full bore on regenerate cycle would be nearly 2000 more than your normal bill.
It’s pretty scary stuff. That’s aside from any possible reading errors. Avoid estimated bills and check the meter reading in the basement immediately if you do get one.

How many calls did customers make before the city should have realized there is a problem with their service?
Sounds like BS to me. Where did our integrity go?

    Welcome R.Ginson & Doreen..

I have a facebook group where I have asked people to share their story..

    Doreen,

it’s not our integrity that left..

It’s Cambridge City Hall employes under the rein of Doug The Terrible..

I have never seen a nastier, city hall ever.. and not just the water billing department…try asking questions on your taxes.. good luck with that..

I had one lady tell me after she was verbally abused by the clerk, and when she demanded to know her name, she was told, NO, she asked to speak to her supervisor.. she waited for upwards of 10 minutes only to have the supervisor (?) inform her that the staff do not have to give her their name and that she couldn’t help her..

Thanks Les kadar for the information. Let’s hope l never need it. l still do not know why it has taken so long to solve this problem. I am certain the billing problem has hurt a lot of people. At one time the Mrs. went downtown to pay our bill and waited in line forty minutes. We pay online now.

I had a similar problem with my last bill, where my bill was more than doubled its normal amount. I called and was basically told that I must have had company, or filled a pool, or some other random thing that I know for certain did not happen in my house. I was told there was NOT A THING they could or would do about it, it was my problem, and I had to pay my bill. It seemed to me that ever since the City took over the water from the Hydro company my rates went up and keep increasing.

    Welcome Chris
Your story is the same as thousands of other Cambridge Residents.. I think it’s time to send a strong message to Cambridge City Hall.. especially to the sitting Mayor.. because he has admitted he has known for 4 years and isn’t going to do a dam thing about it.. That’s called arrogance and ego.. Something we do not have room for any longer in our City!!

I, like 100’s of others (so I am told) had my water freeze up for 2 months & had a bypass line from my neighbour.

Billing issues continued till July where they were warned about going to collection after advice from the dept to only pay the average cost.

This winter I might be without water as they pissed off my neighbour so long.

As Chris mentioned on his post, Ever sense the City took over its been nothing but bull shit. That’s my opinion, but as far as I’m concern they should all be fired. I owned a bigger house in Kitchener and my bills weren’t even half of what I’m paying now, and this house is WAY smaller. There is something fishy going on here. I smell a RAT!

  15. Debbie Duff Vitez October 3, 2014 at 11:37 am

    Hi Rose,
Welcome to the Advocate.. It is bullshit pure and simple.. and it will continue if.. this Mayor gets back in..

He has proven over and over, that you the taxpayer are/is last on his list..
He has others that pull the strings and they don’t include your out of control water bills..

    VOTE VOTE VOTE..
Even tho I don’t think it’s gonna stop him..

You do know that Minors and people who have not lived in Ontario for years are receiving voter cards ?….

I still have all my water/hydro bills back to the early 1980’s. Since my most recent bill was $261 for using 64 cubic metres of water (which is very odd since my wife and I normally only use about 25 cubic metres and were away for 2 weeks of that period), I went and pulled out my old HEC of Cambridge and North Dunfries bills and discovered that we had used the same 64 cubic metres from July to September in 1981 (we used to wash the cars, water the lawn, and do lots of laundry). To my amazement, the total bill was only $22.74 (broken down it was $9.67 for the water, $9.07 for the sewer, and $4.00 for the service charge). According to Statistics Canada, from 1981 until now, the cost of living has increased by 254% due to inflation. So why has the cost of water in Cambridge increased by 1148%, almost 5 times the rate of inflation???

  17. Debbie Duff Vitez October 8, 2014 at 8:40 am

Welcome Russ.. and welcome to Cambridge city billing..
Things have to change and this nonsense has to stop. This Mayor has known for 4 years what is going on.. and yet, he walks around as if nothing is wrong.. He needs a wake up call.. October 27th is right around the corner.
Show him you have had enough of his negligence.

  18. Leskadar@rogers.com'
Les kadar October 8, 2014 at 8:51 pm

Well, hello Russ. Nice to hear you chime in on this water billing issue which is the most unethical bylaw the city of Cambridge currently has. Yet, given how much is at stake, nobody is taking the issue to court, especially the landlords who are losing tens of thousands staying quiet. Ask the region why the water rates are so high they will tell you. This is straight forward fundamental issue that the next bunch of new councillors must tackle and clean up. Does the city have a documented policy on how water meters are read or how the billing process is handled ?
A city that is deep in debt and yet continues spending effortlessly must squeeze every nickel out of its tax payers it can.
This is just one example of that.
