Multiplex location won’t change… by John Gunther

As an old-time native and resident in Hespeler, I have a heavy heart in writing this letter.

I would bet my new red, flannel Christmas underwear the present council will approve Conestoga College for the multiplex without question — cut and dried.

I feel so very sad with all the work that has been done by people like Dr. (Derek) Coleman, Bill Kirby, and many others — too many to mention — to change the location of the multiplex sports complex, or whatever you want to call it.

Something that is to be central for the citizens and future of our children of Cambridge.

It is a very sad day when you cannot count on council and your elected representatives to listen to the people of Cambridge. Unfortunately, we have a council that are totally split.

We have high-end boys and girls on council who do not care how they spend money (their pensions never stop), and the others on council do have some concern but are outvoted by the high-enders,

But Mayor Doug (Craig) runs the show and tends to switch the vote to spend the big bucks.

So very sad. Too bad this council has the final say and another year.

John: I do agree with you in some respects. Yes there are too many ‘High End’ Council Members and too many that will vote ‘Because Staff Recommends It’ which is sad because that tells me they are not listening to the people that elected them to speak on their behalf. What this City needs is a NEW COUNCIL that TRULY does vote for what is best for the ELECTORATE rather than what STAFF RECOMMENDS!!!

It is such a shame that this Council would not be open enough to listen to what Dr. Coleman, Bill Kirby, Ken Tuckey and others have been trying to say. THIS COMPLEX NEEDS TO BE CENTRAL TO THE RESIDENTS of this City and NOT ON A COLLEGE CAMPUS!!!! HEY COUNCIL!! DO YOU HEAR WHAT IS BEING SAID HERE OR ARE YOUR EARS STUFFED WITH PEANUTBUTTER????

Yes you are so right. What is there in this for the Mayor? Why is he pushing Conestoga? Did someone get paid off? As it makes absolutely no sense to build at Conestoga. Arenas have always been the hub of the Community – always! So why is the Mayor ignoring this fact. In the first place the design is all wrong – it was set up for Conestoga – not for Cambridge. Central Cambridge. Wake up Council – think for yourself – ask yourselves – why the push by the Mayor for Conestoga? Why? Why? It is not the cheapest site to build on – Dr. Derek Coleman knows this & he is the man to listen to. Listen to the people – we want CENTRAL – NOT IN THE BOONIES!! I feel this whole issue should start from the beginning – redesign for CENTRAL CAMBRIDGE. Maybe fix up Preston – keep that as a community hub. People like it there. Why is Council making families drive out-of-town???? We were visiting friends in Kitchener on Subnday & they said “THANK YOU” to our Mayor & Council – for saving Kitchener tons of money if built at Conestoga. Then they won’t have to build theirs on the land already purchased in that Kitchener end. WHO ARE THE DUMB ONES – YOU GOT IT – CRAIG & COUNCIL & CITY STAFF (because they are all afraid for their jobs).
WAKE UP TAXPAYERS – email your Councillor – write the paper – complain to your MP – make Craig & Council pay attention to our needs not their WANTS$$$$$

Did anyone see the Editorial in Record by Donna Luelo – she talks like build it right now – no matter right or wrong location – lets just build it. What an idiot Editorial – one can tell she does not have a clue – been at none of the meetings – does not know the history of Craig’s promise to Tibbetts.
NO NO NO – WE WANT IT CENTRAL – or fix up the ones that need fixing & leave as is. We are sick & tired of these people writing articles that don’t have a clue.
YES – LET’S START FROM THE BEGINNING – SCRATCH THIS WHOLE DESIGN WHICH IS FOR CONESTOGA – NOT RIGHT FOR CAMBERIDGE. WAKE UP TAXPAYERS OR YOU’LL GET WHAT YOU DON’T WANT & HAVE TO PAY FOR IT & drive drive drive. CRAZY NONSENSE BY CRAIG & COUNCIL.
ONLY LISTEN TO DR. DEREK COLEMAN WHO KNOWS THE FACTS & FIGURES – GRRRRRR$$$$$

I agree with you Maggie. The residents of the City of Kitchener need to keep their noses out of this controversial and very heated situation. They do not know the whole story and they are biased and are feeding a biased view to the public that frankly don’t have an opinion on this subject. Yes I have been called a ‘MALCONTENT’ AND YES MAYBE I AM!!
We have to be realistic here with this complex..First and foremost the POWERS THAT BE have never really disclosed to the TAXPAYER the true cost of the Conestoga College Site and WHERE THE MONEY WILL COME FROM!! Mind you we all know that it will be paid for by our tax dollars!! This City has been spending money like it flows freely. Is there a RESERVE fund for this MULTIPLEX that they have been setting aside TAX PAYERS DOLLARS for? Before this city enters into ANY building where the funds are coming from needs to be a MAJOR CONSIDERATION!!! We live in a City that has a fair amount of seniors and people on a fixed income. To increase the property taxes to a point where the City can afford to build this complex will mean that many of these people will end up HOMELESS!!! Mayor Craig should have thought of this YEARS ago and started to set aside money for this project…DID HE???? NOPE!!! If this complex gets located at Conestoga College the ECONOMIC downfall will be realized by the merchants here…after all WHO WILL DRIVE EAST ON THE 401 for accommodation, food, and all the things that this city has to offer. Just look at the Cambridge Centre Mall for example!! A mall that is not too old but there are two major tenants that have left the mall now and several other stores are out of there….Ask the merchants…are they getting the public to spend money in the mall?? Well now if we were to build the complex in a CENTRAL location in Cambridge I am sure you would see that change…as well as the restaurants, motels and other services that we have..and when the merchants make more money from the public…they pay more in taxes which in the end would be a win win for this complex

Feed the beast. Kitchener wants this for their people later down the road. Just like the LRT, we pay they use.

We know all of the above – but we must get this info out to the 2018 Voters. They need to be clued in to all the garbage going on in Cambridge.
It is festering thanks to Craig – but when you are a manipulator & there are those that allow to be manipulated – then that’s what we have at City Hall.
