More than a ‘vocal minority’ opposed to Conestoga College location for multiplex: by Les Wells

In a recent Letter to the Editor, John Morton suggested members of Cambridge Minor Hockey write to their councillor in support of the four ice pads and the building of the sport complex at Conestoga College.

He went on to suggest they need to oppose a “vocal minority” who have nothing to do with ice usage in Cambridge.

I am one of the “vocal minority” and I do have a stake in the ice usage.

Both of my children went through the Cambridge Minor Hockey system from age 6 to 14. They both played house league hockey and one of them went on to play AAA travel hockey. Now, my grandchildren are learning to skate.

Perhaps CMHA needs to look at the feasibility of keeping and expanding the arena at Churchill Park to two ice pads.

The Preston arena is one of the best places to watch hockey due to the amount of comfortable seating.

If both arenas in Preston are re-purposed, the Preston community will be left with no ice rink for the first time in 50 years. If council says no, you may have to fight for the changes you want.

I am not opposed to the new sports complex but locating it at Conestoga College is, in my opinion, ill-advised and short sighted.

When 300 to 400 people take the time to attend not one but several meetings on a topic, they are more than just a noisy minority.

This is a phrase used by politicians who really don’t like the message they are hearing, particularly when the message explicitly challenges their opinions.

The noisy majority is not going away. I expect city hall to be standing room only when the decision is made on the location of the sports complex.

Editors note***

OVER 2500 LOCAL RESIDENTS SIGNED AN ON LINE PETITION..

OPPOSING THE LOCATION.. Is this Mayor listening to his constituents..

NO.. is the answer ..

This is a quote I pulled from another article that ran in the Cambridge Times more proof this mayor is not listening to anyone but his puppet masters who want the Conestoga site.. After all the meetings, the stacked questionable TASK FORCE, and their findings..

Cambridge’s mayor says Conestoga College is, for him, still the top site for construction of the much-debated sports complex, according to a May 31 news report.

Well a Vocal Minority…come on now…3000 signatures in opposition to the complex being located at Conestoga College in my estimation is more than a VOCAL MINORITY…the people that turned up at Council Chambers in April and then again the people that turned up at the Hespeler Arena in May to me indicated that they are not a VOCAL MINORITY

These are people that want a complex located so EVERYONE has access to this..after all I am ASSUMING this complex is going to be built for the
PEOPLE OF CAMBRIDGE WITH OUR TAX MONEY..therefore it needs to be located where we all have easy ACCESS TO SOMETHING WE PAID FOR...

In ward 5 there could well be a change. The developments Pam has allowed to go through is going to seal her fate I feel. We were at Victoria Park on the weekend and several people upset with the Lake, Gaslight, and her apparent slurring running on words during the Rogers council meeting have rumbles of “Time is up Pam” on many lips. Ward 5 has been embarrassed too many times. Being beaten as an incumbent will be the final blow. Yes, we are upset here Pam.

I really do not think the Councillor should be voting on the Gaslight project as she lives within blocks of this Development, Is that not a conflict of Interest?

Maybe a roadside test should be asked for at council Kathy. I watched it as well. Yes, even the mayor got involved. Maybe she had not slept for 5 days, or maybe……
