Keep school board seat Cambridge

Rather than follow this lengthy process for filling the seat left behind by longtime Waterloo Region District School Board trustee Andrea Mitchell, who resigned at the end of March, the opportunity should be handed to the fourth-place candidate (Cambridge and North Dumfries have three seats at the board).

That’s Cambridge’s Crystal Whetham, who finished about 1,000 votes back of third place, and about 200 ahead of the fifth-place finisher. She is reportedly still “very interested” in taking on the role.

Quick, easy and it follows the principles of our democratic system.

Instead, the school board has opened the opportunity to virtually every adult in Waterloo Region, no matter which community they call home. People have until May 19 to file an application, along with a 500-word essay, followed by publicly conducted  interview process.

Mitchell’s replacement is to be sworn in on June 12, nearly two and a half months after her resignation.

Sadly, the decision to go with this cumbersome process has already been made — a poor choice indeed. With that in mind, we urge school board members to ensure the seat is given to someone from Cambridge or North Dumfries.

It is, after all, a seat intended for this community and to give it to someone from elsewhere would shortchange local residents.

Well of course, makes definite common sense to replace with the runner up. What is so hard to figure this out.
Oh, right, have to make it difficult. No wonder there is already infighting in the Board – can see from the decision to take applications one of the reasons.
What happens to people in these positions – does common sense go out the window.
Come on – lets take the direct route – replace with Whetham & get on with a full Board.
Oh, right, someone on the Board has a “friend” they want on – oh darn I forget how this works.
o.k. carry on with your filling in with a “friend” rather than the honest sensible way.
You sound like you run your business like the Mayor & Council of Cambridge – lots of dishonesty & distrust. Carry on – make a mess of your charge.

Nothing new here.. the School Board and trustee’s have as bad a reputation as Cambridge Council..

now this evening the W.R.S.B had their meeting to appoint some one for the Trustee Position and they appointed a Lady from Kitchener to represent us in Cambridge the two people from Cambridge that ran in the last Election did not get one vote from the Trustees and then after the vote they put forth a motion to destroy the Ballots

As politics rules environmental decisions it also rules educational ones. The result has been apparent in our childrens’ and grandchildrens’ education for many years.

It is unfortunate that well intended people are plowed by the Cynicism borne of incompetence and contempt, seek out a new opportunity Crystal and bring the crowd with you, I do believe right will prevail in the end, Do not give up all the greats of History had to fail before they won big and became great….sent from a Friend who used to work for my Good Friend Gerry M………

As I read in the paper the young Lady is from Cambridge and that is a plus, However the two people from Cambridge that put their name forward and tried against the old tired and true Trustees knowing they are hard to beat in Cambridge really were looked over when they could have brought the runner up to the position, I would think that Andrea Mitchell went through her own kind of Hell trying to get along with this Board so probably is for the best that Crystal did not get the position because she would not have gone along with their nonsense and would have been at odds with this disfuncional Board of Directors at all times and once again Term Limits, I would have to add I am very disappointed with the two Trustees from Cambridge and they will not get my vote in the next Election.

Gee just thinking Do you think the Council would bring me up as the runner up in the last Election if Mr. Craig decided to leave. mmmmmmm…I am laughing so hard right now at my own statement….

Not funny – we residents sure wish he would leave of his own accord. Don’t know if we can impeach a Mayor. Would be fun to try. Amazing the crap he has pulled over the years & spending our money like wildfire – but not on items needed or necessary just on wants & demands.
Sure wish you were with us Linda – need some honest thinkers & support for the business people of Cambridge. Like support them with a Complex built in Town. What a lot of garbage coming from our Mayor & Councillors. I know you are laughing Linda, but the mess this Mayor has made of Cambridge is a big fat joke.

I watched front row seat for ten years at all the crap that has been pulled over the years, why do you think I left after all that time, I could not take any more of the nonsense, why do you think I ran for Mayor (twice) so please do not think I am not with you, I just know how it all works under Mr. Craig, and he will stay as long as he wants to be there, if you get my drift.
