Kathryn McGarry’s attitude will improve Cambridge as mayor

Opinion Oct 23, 2018Cambridge Times

Cambridge has elected a new mayor to lead us in Kathryn McGarry.

Kathryn didn’t just knock at the door, she kicked it down by winning every single polling location in Cambridge. This has never been done before and may never be repeated.

When Kathryn chose to run for mayor, I contacted her immediately to ask if I could help in any way. I chopped at her heels on issues when she was our local MPP, so I wasn’t sure she would accept my offer. What I found during our meeting was someone willing to put past differences aside and move forward.

During the next several weeks I watched her overcome numerous personal and election-related challenges with a calm, problem-solving attitude she will need as the mayor of Cambridge.

Several times I dropped by her election office and interrupted her with questions. Kathryn would put down what she was doing, got me answers and I was back on the road.

I believe with her open door concept, Cambridge citizens will see city hall as a more welcoming, we-work-for-you building that listens to all. You have your work cut out for you, Kathryn, to solve the voter issues that so dearly need to be addressed.

I’m confident you will do so. It has been fun and my pleasure working with your team during this election, Mayor McGarry. Thank you.

Thomas Vann

I second your noted pleasure of working with Mayor McGarry and her friendly campaign workers. It was great to work along with her as she just kept going herself. Kathryn earned her position and I believe she will treat it with respect and also the people she will be working with. Her husband & family were right along there with her & with her team – a true working together group!!
We are looking forward to Mayor McGarry stepping into her new position and treating everyone equally and with dignity and openness.
Well done and am looking forward to seeing you blossom in your new position and Cambridge come back alive to openness, honesty and fairness to all parts of Cambridge.

Good letter. She knocked at our door and was the only one that did. So she got 3 votes here. We were asked questions and she took notes. This is a change from who we had. l hope she does well. Mike Devine is back in and did a good job.

Yes re Kathryn – seemed to be all over & attending so many events. Hope she has been resting up for couple days.
And she just seems to be interested in what people are asking – wants to have Town Hall Meetings and that will be so good & positive. Certainly different!!
Love Mike – he does a good job. Always willing to get info for you.
Here’s hoping our City can get back on an even keel – not everything going to Galt such as in the last approval or more money spent downtown Galt – really. Another facelift – think we have other priorities at this time.
Too bad there wasn’t some new life in Council as well, but hope we get more thinkers this time. Need some fresh ideas.

We are stuck wish Pam again. Bill Kirby had his sign on our lawn and many we knew. Not sure how he lost but at least Doug is gone. What a relief. I read about the sour grapes part and I agree. He must be upset about this.

Yes, she kicked in the door for sure and by a woman no less. Not even one poll was won by him. l wonder if Pam and Donna will call McGarry “your worship”? His PC colors did nothing for him and his campaign group bombed out. The letter title says it all. Attitude. Foolish to have run and go out a failed candidate. He did do some good things while in office yet his treatment of many people caused a rebellion and the multiplex killed his credibility. Then we had Donna Reid call people malcontents by challenging his worship. People remembered all this October 22nd and this date will go down in history. McGarry showed full class by telling Doug she was going to run. The Blue Machine sure went bust big time and didn’t stand a chance against the two time minister. She was too much for Doug all through the race. Craig never even won a debate. The photoshop on the bridge killed Doug’s return to office and upset a large number of people. We have our city back for the people and not a legacy hunter. Good work McGarry on your huge win for everyone. Kaching!!!

We are thrilled Kathryn is our new mayor. In the past she always made our meetings at the Legion we asked her to attend. Helpful and considerate has always been her way. A fresh face was needed and you are a pleasant change. Good things are coming to Cambridge.

What a fine evening it was at Doug’s last council meeting. As you can tell, I was not a fan of his. He did some good things but the 2010 election was the turning point. Good bye Doug and I wish you well out of politics. I do hope your family gets lots of your time. I am pleased Kathryn is Mayor and I know she will do us proud. Ole.

What a boring evening – knew it would be a waste of time. Was nice to hear the lady talk about the camping in Parks etc. – agree this bylaw needs to be turned down. Interesting that Waterloo does not contribute re Homeless – but they have their own Homeless.
Should have left when the Councillors all HAD to say their lies about how the Mayor did the best for Cambridge – like wasting our tax dollars on things we did not need. I think he did the best for his pocket book$$$ What do you think people?????
Oh well – it is over & on with Mayor Kathryn McGarry – our best to her for sure!!

Anyone read the Times yet? More crap from Craig re the Complex – doesn’t he know he got fired. Think the Times goofed on his age – as he must be at least 82 – sure looks it.
We do not want a Multiplex any more – we do not want anything at the Mall – that is a dead issue. We want 2 Ice Rinks at the Ice Park where they belong at their expense – what is so hard to understand about this.
The swim part & maybe Pickle ball can be at another location. Pickle Ball very popular.
Again – I think Times goofed – Craig has to be at least 82 or 85 for sure.
