Damning With Faint Praise

Three female Cambridge Councillors present at an International Women’s day breakfast last March. Two of the three routinely (if not always) vote with Mayor Craig. The third Jan Liggett is her own person. She votes according to the issues which means sometimes she votes contrary to the Mayor’s position. Over the last two and a half years Cambridge’s mayor has been displeased. He has his sycophants on Council, both male and female and Cambridge citizens know who they are. He has made it very clear by past behaviour whom he favours and whom he disfavours on his Council.

Along comes a golden opportunity to show some class. Maybe just as we have a Mother’s Day and a Father’s Day, perhaps we should have both an International Women’s Day as well as an International Men’s Day. Or perhaps most men would be embarassed by the simple, historical fact that women have long been valued for their traditional strengths and grossly undervalued for so called men’s areas of strength ie. organization, courage, strength, decision making under fire etc.. To deny that women have for centuries and millennia been discriminated against just as African-Americans have been in the U.S., would be beyond ridiculous. Hence a golden opportunity for the Mayor of Cambridge to simply add his weight to the belated recognition of all women as having virtues and strengths equal to those of their male counterparts.

Nope not Mayor Craig.

He used the opportunity on International Women’s Day to damn with faint praise a female councillor who disagrees with him on many issues. How clever and subtle he was by praising his two favourite women councillors as “…mentors that have helped shaped my values on women’s issues.

” Pretty swarmy that was Doug; taking a backhanded, partisan slap at a female colleague on International Women’s Day.

Interesting to me that the Integrity Commissioner is an Interim one, namely Agree Inc..

The firm of ADR Chambers departed in March but did not disclose why.

Up here in Woolwich, ADR Chambers are our Integrity Commissioner just as they are in Kitchener and Waterloo.

I was present for their presentation to Woolwich Council recently and was quite impressed. Impressed with their presentation that is. It was smooth, professional and folksy all in one. Almost gave me a warm glow in my heart. Wow does truth and honesty actually have a place anywhere in politics? Does anyone else find this whole exercise just a little unlikely?

The province have mandated by legislation that municipalities have Integrity Commissioners.

This of course is one of the more corrupt provincial governments we’ve had in recent memory and they are legislating integrity in municipal governments?

Might just as well legislate that all politicians must tell the truth upon pain of three wet noodles across the head otherwise.

Yes that sanction is just about right.

These Integrity Commissioners report to Council who are not remotely bound to follow their advice anyways.

Best case for Councils is that these Commissioners merely reinforce their positions by adding their supporting opinions (as in Cambridge) and worst case scenario is that Councils say thank you for your opinion but we respectfully disagree and then restate their position for further public consumption.

Are they all window dressing or are some for real? Only time will tell. So far however not so good.

This is all so political if you ask me. We all know that if you lodge a complaint with an Integrity Commissioner that they only pay lip service to the person lodging the complaint unless of course there is a vendetta against a certain councillor.
Now asking us to pay a fee to lodge a complaint…ONE more way to take away our RIGHTS..COME ON NOW COUNCIL..get real…the only reason complaints are lodged are because YOU wanted a CODE OF CONDUCT …. we as citizens want to make sure YOU follow the Rules YOU WANTED. ….GEE maybe that wasn’t such a good STAFF RECOMMENDATION to VOTE on after all????

You said it RK! As far as I am concerned the ignoring of the one female Councillor is just as bad if not worse that Devine was accused of. At least Devine apologized – more than ignorant Craig would ever do. What he did was very very wrong and improper. Especially when one of the Councillors he mentioned wasn’t even at the event but Jan was. And yes we know how the Integrity Commissioners work – right for the ones that pay him$$$$ I made a complaint re Craig to Ont. Int. Com. – would not look at it until I went through ours – yeah – right – we know how that works – BUT THE STRANGEST THING – is that one of the items I was complaining about, I now see the Mayor makes great efforts not to do any more – ISN`T THAT INTERESTING – DO WE THINK THE ONT. COM. WARNED CRAIG – YES – IT SURE LOOKS LIKE IT. So there goes that trust down the drain – so now I know why it is a farce now to complain to the City Int. Com. – what a crock of ***** – what know who is paying who!! And then his comment re mentors that have helped shape his values – well one is a DRUNK & other is a man hater – so good values Craig. You missed your chance to honour a female that fights for others – not just for one`s self. Craig ought to be impeached!!!!

Alan – the one missing Councillor – Pam Wolfe – was not even in attendance!! But she was honoured and not the one that was in attendance – namely Jan Leggitt.
    This makes it even worse!
What a poor example of a Mayor – favourites – & his poor wife – does she know what is going on$$ Maybe, guess she likes her bread well-buttered.

Don’ they make a lovely couple – “Monkey see – Monkey do”. And he says “jump” and she says “how high”.
    Well trained she is.

U Thank you for the correction. You’re right that does make it even worse.

the integrity commissioner is hired and paid by the city

does conflict of interest sound familiar

I see Dyke allowing this to happen. He might get a truck load of coal in his drive this year. An offer of a Lake Ontario fishing trip or a hunting trip to North Bay would give someone lots of time to discuss a little love. We could kill a few pops while shooting the breeze on transparency. He needs to see how I think and why doing the best for our town would blow the doors off other council meetings as a kind city. Walk a mile in our shoes Dyker and smell the roses. Loving and kindness….Tommy.

The idea of a Councillor evening thinking of imposing a charge if anyone wants to lodge a complaint against anyone on Council is APPALLING.. Do we not live in a DEMOCRACY in this Country?? DO we not want our Council to be OPEN, HONEST, TRANSPARENT AND WORK FOR THE ELECTORATE in a matter that is UPSTANDING and WITHOUT REPUTE?? If there are members of Council not acting in this matter, there have to be investigations that take place. After all, Council did implement a CODE OF CONDUCT for members of Council to ABIDE by and if this CODE is not being followed, HOW, I ask again HOW can we ensure that COUNCIL is acting OPENLY, AND HONESTLY and that they are not BREAKING THEIR OWN CODE OF CONDUCT… COUNCIL needs to follow this code they wanted in place and if they are not abiding by it in any way, CITIZENS of this Community need to hold them accountable and if that means getting the INTEGRITY COMMISSIONER involved so be IT!!!!

Tom Vann May 25, 2017 at 6:35 pm

Correct rk. There is no doubt a 6 foot pile of feared info out there numerous council members want buried. This assists that, and prevents a shotgun wedding atmosphere. I see Dyke gone before the next election. Frank and Doug out for health reasons therefore Donna will pack it in if Doug is gone. Pam will have quit drinking and life will be boring. Council will be blown up, few returning. This will open the door for Hermie the Hamster, Elton John’s other sister, and Jerry the Gerbil to run. My lawyer told me to stay the way I am and not change. I’m normal in his eyes. I spoke to someone from Nam that mentioned the bombs, guns and chemicals had no effect on him and many political people today would have never made it home and probably would have been shot over there by their own. Now that is a code of conduct. My meds are fading, gotta go. Oh yeah, if I get elected there will be no homo pride flag blowing on our flagpole. It would be replaced by a vet flag, or Ontario flag. Did I miss anything?

Not a thing Tommy – you know where it is all at. Too bad the people running this City isn’t up to snuff.
Imagine letting property go for 1.9 m. – when we need land for the Sports Complex in Cambridge – central. What a bunch of non-thinkers. We see they changed the Logo on Cambridge Activity book – what is this all about. We know it isn’t all right here – so is that the reason??? So it can be all some where else???? Also changed on City Newsletter – what is going on???? I suppose this is another nitch in Craig’s plan – ???? Who knows.

I know this will upset many including the Police and City Hall. I will not be commenting much for a while as I have hoof-an-dick rash. Actually I am helping a senior restore his car and between car shows and this I will be swamped. If anything comes up that will require immediate assistance please call Dyke and he should know where I am via the CIA monitors hooked up to my jock. Ole’.
