WOOLWICH — Woolwich Coun. Scott Hahn has resigned, nine months before the Oct. 22 municipal election.

He cited the demands of a new job, emailing his resignation to council Jan. 17.

“Please accept my immediate resignation from Council and all its duties. I have accepted a new position in my career, and it has become very apparent that it is no longer practical to continue to serve on Council and provide the commitment level residents deserve.

“This is an extremely difficult choice, and I hope you can understand it.

“I want to thank each of you for a great three years and I apologize for not being able to finish the rest of the term with you.”

Council must now fill his vacant Ward 1 seat by appointing someone or by holding a byelection. By law the seat cannot remain vacant.

“I’m disappointed that he’s not able to finish out the term,” Mayor Sandy Shantz said.

Hahn was elected to council for the first time in 2014. He’s an electrician by trade, a military veteran of the Afghanistan campaign, and a father of three who lives in Elmira. He did not immediately respond to interview requests.

Shantz favours filling his seat by appointment, arguing the general election is too near to justify the cost of a byelection. Council is to discuss the issue Jan. 30.

If council chooses to appoint someone, it could advertise for candidates and select one, or it could choose from among willing runners-up in the last election. Local councils and school boards have done both since 2014.

“I’m not sure I have a huge preference,” Shantz said.

Hahn was among several councillors taken privately to court by resident Alan Marshall over financial reporting errors in the 2014 election. A prosecutor withdrew the case against him.

Four other experienced candidates didn’t get elected to Ward 1 while Scott due to his last name in Elmira combined with the greatest number of signs came in first. Most signs and yet the lowest claimed election expenses ($258) and he couldn’t understand why he was audited. Meanwhile Dr. Dan Holt CPAC (Chemtura Public Advisory Committee) Chair was the runnerup (ie. came in third for only two spots). Lets see if Woolwich Council appoint Dr. Holt to Council or not. The next highest vote getter passed away shortly after the election.

For whatever reason he at least resigned on his own.
Will Mann & Monteira have the same sense to resign from Cambridge Council until the Police suit is settled. They should. Especially Monteira after what he did!!
More to come on this issue for sure.
Gee Cambridge is in the news: A Council going nowhere on the Sports Complex.
    The Police suit.
And the drug crisis in Cambridge – more deaths than Kitchener – pretty bad. Of course our useless mayor took too long to do something about it.
Oh well – goes on & on.

Doug Craig’s days are numbered being mayor unless the residents just do not care and act like a bunch of victims of the Region of Waterloo.

We have problems here as well. Great people till they get elected. I will say your city and region has outplayed Guelph for bad news. He probably owes people favors like our mayor did. Good luck.

Rick – you got that right about our Mayor owing. That’s why he keeps pushing to put Cambridge’s Sports plex on Conestoga property. Yes – he promised tibbets because he owes him for a goof he did. But we don’t owe him & we want the sports plex in CAMBRIDGE NOT OUT OF.
Yes Cambridge is kind of a mess – Mayor spending money left & right – millions on an old post office – that only a few will be using – a bridge to NOWHERE – AT A cost of 1 1/4 Million – that very few will be using and now a CAMBRIDGE sign to the tun of $77,400. -wow it lights up – but is plain aluminum by day. So who is ever downtown in that area to see it lit. HOW DUMB IS OUR MAYOR – TOPS
DUMB!! He keeps getting voted in by people that don’t know what is going on or just don’t care. Our tax rate is so high. Did not do a good job of eliminating things we DO NOT NEED. Craig just keeps putting in stuff from his LIST! Then we have everyone coming to Cambridge to get their needle fix. Really!!
I cringe when I think he might get in for another term – oh no – oh no no no$$$$
