City aims to boost voter turnout

this ran in the Times………….. comments invited below

When it comes to getting voters out, the City of Cambridge is no worse than an other mid-size city, according to political affairs consultant and professor Robert Williams.

While turnout during the last election was 48.3 per cent, the average turnout across the province was just 44.35 per cent.

Williams said voter turnout in small municipalities is higher than in middle-size or large cities. He has recommended that Cambridge promote public involvement all the time.

Council voted to suspend recruitment for its Voters to Vote Task Force and is forming a Citizen Engagement Task Force to get more voters to the polls.

As for Cambridge, it is appropriate that the city has revived its voters’ task force advisory committee to encourage greater participation in the 2014 municipal vote. We can think of no more appropriate candidates for this committee than Vann and Vitez.

    Tommy, get on the list..

l can just hand in the court case. Do most of the stuff in reverse of what they did last time and that should fix it. More money tossed on another consultant that we didn’t need but it looks good for them to try the best they can for a better turnout.

Do you really think they want someone to fix it Deb?

Send over just one thing to Prof. Williams.

The sheet showing how many polling stations there were in the previous election versus this last one and ask him a question.

Do fewer polling stations effect voter turn out ?

Has any of you ever matched up the previous election budget to the last one to see how much less money the city spent to increase voter turn out?

If they did or was it the same?

Perhaps Linda W. could help with that.

    Hi Mags,

Yes he was as memory serves.. I will have to track him down..

If anyone is interested in reading Professor Williams report it is available on our city web site on the agenda for the council meeting of March 26, 2012 from pages 79 to 115.

On page 92 of this report he reports that our voter turn out was only 29%.

In his terms of reference for the citizen engagement task force he states that the task force should consist of 5 members of the public and that there are no council representatives on the task force or no member of the public who is interested in becoming a candidate at the 2014 Municipal election.

Thomas would indeed be a good candidate for this task force in my opinion.

So why were council members on this force from last year when they knew it was a conflict of interest? l ,may check this out but must know if my comments and or media info will be limited or stopped. So many things to know of before hand. lt’s a damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Can these people ever be trusted with me in there? This has all been planned out and moving in the future would be hampered. When do you apply and where? The last time l applied for the V to V T F they never even were nice enough to contact me that it was turfed.

I was on this Task Force,
However the Clerk told me that I should remove myself from this Task Force because I would have a Conflict of Interest so I removed myself and told the others that were on this Task Force that they could have a Conflict also.
They disagreed with me and stayed on the Task Force….I think I was tricked Tommy….what do you think?

  9. bemcdowell@sympatico.ca'
Bev McDowell April 5, 2012 at 3:24 pm

Linda, if the clerk advised you that being on this task force would be a “conflict of interest”, then, in my opinion he should have advised the rest of the councillors and anyone running for council of the same.
Do you know if he advised everyone else of this?

I agree with the clerk about this being a “conflict of interest” and everyone on it that was running should have removed themselves, in my opinion.

Perhaps this is why Professor Williams recommended that no one who is on council or no one who is running should be allowed on this task force.

  10. Debbie Duff Vitez April 5, 2012 at 4:34 pm

    Linda..
Ben Tucci insisted he be in charge of this “TASK FORCE”..
Duly noted those members who remained were all voted in..

The heading..” City aims to boost voter turnout “

This is what the heading should read.

“City claims to boost voter turnout”

    Thomas have you applied yet?

  11. lvann_11@sympatico.ca'
Thomas Vann April 5, 2012 at 9:19 pm

Go figure Linda. Look who ran it. Dnna Ried told me they did nothing to better seniors turnout. She said they always vote. They do when they are able to vote. No sense going into a rant folks the rest is history and l’m sure some are proud of what they did. Their moms must have made them a big cake and told them good job. What was that St. Peter? Sounds like you got hosed Linda. Yes l mailed Alice but you know.

  12. Debbie Duff Vitez April 5, 2012 at 9:59 pm

    did you mean Alex? lol
I would personally go to the City and inquire in person Tom.. Don’t trust anyone from that office.

I spoke to Bev today ..
Well maybe you can post here Bev, as to what happened when you contacted Mr. Mitchell the deputy clerk, with a simple request.

I think the public need to hear what kind of egos are really running our city.

Our numbers are off the charts at the moment with new readers.. We hit 3000 last week.
So the word is getting out..

Keeping the public informed and keeping people in the know about the toxins we are ingesting is the only reason I continue with this site…
OH..and of course Tommy’s daily dose of wisdom.. lol

As for hacking ,it seems to have slowed down as well… hmmmm someone must be getting nervous..?

Thomas Vann April 5, 2012 at 10:17 pm

Well you forgot to mail me about the going to the law about someone doing the hacking that we know of. Call me. Alex didn’t answer my question. He said go to the city site and find out. While on the Sunshine list now , l would have thought his helpfulness would have improved but what the heck. l have about 63 ideas on how to improve people coming out to vote in this town. Enjoy the weekend folks l will be at the BB having a rootbeer.

I Honestly do not know if the Clerk told the others about the Conflict but I was told and took his advise and removed myself from the Task Force….

  15. Debbie Duff Vitez April 5, 2012 at 10:47 pm

Tommy I told you get Linda to help you around that bullshit game he is playing..
She knows all the players down there and where you should go to apply..

Sorry Tommy, I can’t say anything at the moment, in case it’s you hacking me.. ROFLMAO..

Thomas Vann April 6, 2012 at 10:34 am

l’ll just go to the Mayor for help Deb. l will go around everyone. The Mayor and l are on a 1st name basis.

Robert Ross April 6, 2012 at 11:28 am

They will convene the task force.
Task Force will write a report and make recommendations,
    Council will accept report.
Cambridge Times will exalt the report and revel us with how Council is looking closely at it.
Council will hold an in-camera meeting, during which they will laugh and pat themselves on the back on what a good job they do and decide where Dougie is vacationing next on taxpayers dime.
2014 election rolls around, same moron who ran the last one gets the job again.
Task Force report is ignored and the voters told to go “feck themselves”.

Bets on this is how it goes?

  18. Debbie Duff Vitez April 6, 2012 at 11:37 am

I’m not so sure this time Robert.. You have no idea the number of watch dogs that are on board to watch the next Cambridge Election play out..
I don’t care if they all get back in..( well that’s a lie).. but the next election will be run the way Legal Elections are suppose to be run in this Country.
Even their George Bush tabulators might not be used..

    Hope you are right Deb.

There will be another “High Tech” plan in the works.
Some can’t afford not to get these people back in. Robert is correct l’m sure.
Why would l dare even think of trusting anyone at City Hall that has anything to do with the election process in this town? l saw 1st hand in my ward games played because l was smoking with votes. Not to mention the boys going around stealing my signs. Oh yea, l know your part’s BS.

Voters were made fools of in this town and no one lost their job. What does that tell ya?

Good work, right Robert. What a mess council would have had if l was to have …….

Big deal, less than 2 years to move.
