A simple ‘sorry’ doesn’t cut it for photoshop controversy

Opinion 09:26 AM Cambridge Times

I am beyond upset that Doug Craig, the current mayor of Cambridge, can just simply just say “he is sorry” for his part in the removal of a candidate (Kathryn McGarry) from a group photo at a community event, as found on page four in your Sept. 18 paper.

It is my understanding that the original photo (before the Photoshop) was found on Mayor Doug Craig’s own Instagram page. This was not a simple “face in a hole” prank. The level of expertise and time it takes to create an altered photo of this quality is at least one to two hours, long enough for someone to realize exactly what they were doing, why they are doing it and to think before they posted this up all over social media.

This was not an attempt at humour and I don’t believe it was intended to be funny. It was calculated, deceitful, unprofessional, vindictive and immature. Certainly not what you would like to see from the mayor of your city.

I hate to coin the phrase from south of our border but this is quite the “fake news.”

This childish school boy bullying is something President Donald Trump and his team would create. What Doug Craig and his team did is disturbing on so many levels. A simple “I am sorry” does not cut it in my opinion.

The people of Cambridge need a mayor that can be respected, one that can trusted. Doug Craig is fiscally responsible for the city of Cambridge. If he or his team are willing to take an hour or two out of their day to delicately remove a credible, respected candidate that is running for his position as mayor of Cambridge out of a photo, what else will Doug Craig and his team be willing to erase?

    Wondering September 22, 2018 at 4:35 pm

Great article & so true. But the big worry is election day as there has always been the possibility of Internet vote fixing. And there are those of us that fear the same event on Oct. 22nd. We have the name of the company monitoring, but under whose instructions and as to how it is being controlled – re-directed votes – it has been done & could be done. There were suggestions to the present Mayor & Council to discontinue internet voting – is not reliable. But no luck!
We are asking people to vote paper ballots only – preferably at the early polls, but please vote Oct. 22nd.
I don’t know about the rest of you – but in conversation with many many people in all parts of Cambridge – “no I did not vote for Craig” – then how does he keep getting in?? That should be your big question these days. How?? hmmmmmm
Paper ballots – they can be recounted & checked. But please vote.

This was a really nasty job done by the Craig campaign crew. I would have to say the mayor knew. How can the mayor be trusted on Oct 22/18.

  3. TJT September 24, 2018 at 12:57 pm

Mayor Craig cannot say he had no idea of this stunt that was pulled during the campaign.
Frankly I am appalled that Mayor Craig would stoop so low and post something like this to his Instagram account during an election campaign.
Shame on you Mayor Craig..and you think a ‘simple sorry’ covers it and it will go away?
Well my hope is that this ‘stunt’ costs you your chance at the ‘Big Chair’

I wonder where the city have been getting all the rocks they been using for Galt. HMMM. Who sells rocks in this town. Did city hall get a deal? Maybe l will run for mayor. Just read what Craig’s team did. Of course Craig new nothing about it. Reminds me of Shultz from Hogan’s Hero’s.

    Iknow September 28, 2018 at 10:18 pm

Of course he knew what was going on.
Just looking at the lady imposed – she reminds me of a lady in Hespeler.
Must find out. She would have know what was going on for sure.
Wonder if she got paid – hush money – or just got paid for posing.
Will investigate the lady she reminds me of – just saw her on Wed. delivering brochures for the Election.
Will find out & let you all know who she is & the details.
Tune in!! Remember to vote early Poll – Oct. 6 – Hespeler Arena 10 a.m. to 8.

We were going to vote for Craig. Really we were. After this bad example of fair play we are not. This news was all over and was embarrassing for all.

Thats great Rene – we have long known Craig’s true colours but after this photo re-touch it helps others to wake up to his devious ways.
Many of his own “followers” have decided “enough is enough” – yes definitely time for change & Craig should realize he has wore out his welcome.
the people at City Hall can’t stand him any more except Dyke – who is a puppet – but a very well-paid puppet.
Just vote everyone – early poll Oct. 6th – use the paper ballots – more trustworthy than Internet which can be fixed – just read all the article on the Advocate.
    Here’s praying for a change.

We were at a wedding Friday and our table got into a discussion on who to vote for. Tucci took a big hit as a vote splitter and not trustable. Doug Craig is so badly disliked about the bridge, the photo and taxes we had to talk about something else. Cambridge is on fire and l think people are upset.

    Maggie September 30, 2018 at 5:00 pm

Well in my groups – it is McGarry. No one is holding her Liberal loss against her – this is a whole different ball game. Stories are Tucci was put in by Craig for a vote split. Tucci isn’t coming back to town – who is he kidding. Their friends & kids friends are in T.O. – not in Cambridge.
And in 2010 – who helped promote the Old Post Office & the Theatre – paid more for the Post Office than worth & the theatre gets free taxes – why?
No McGarry has common sense – her husband is a stable part of her – lovely man.
Yes Cambridge is on fire & McGarry will sort the messes out that Craig has created & Tucci helped to create in his time on Council.
Vote early Polls – vote paper ballot. Early Polls Oct. 6th. Be there!!

    Searching October 9, 2018 at 8:58 pm

Doesn’t anyone recognize this lady in Kathryn’s place?
To me she looks like a lady that lives on Guelph Ave. Hespeler.
An old friend of Craigs who once lived there?
Surely someone recognizes her – need info on this imposed situation.

Remember everyone – Vote early Polls – vote only paper ballot.
Vote McGarry. Ward 1 Vote Cliff Vanclief – both good people.
    We need change!!

Ask anyone about this picture and they’ve seen it and will tell you who they are not voting for. This man is not good for our city. Gone. R.I.P.

Shelly Overland October 17, 2018 at 3:23 pm

My husband and l have been out west for six weeks finishing off his fathers estate. I saw this and was shocked Mr. Craig knew nothing of it. l can say one thing for certain we won’t be voting for him this time.

    Identify October 19, 2018 at 2:10 pm

Has no one identified this lady yet?? It would make a good story of how the event took place. I think she looks like a lady living in Hespeler on Guelph Ave. so one day I will go & have a good look at her – but Craig used to live on Guelph Ave. – so possible a friend of his.
Will confirm when I solve this nasty situation of imposing McGarry.
Yep – he is nervous – so as long as the Internet voting is not tempered with the results could be a nice change for Cambridge.
Vote on Mon. Oct. 22 – but only use paper ballots – which can be re-counted.

Talk to anyone in Cambridge and see if they think Craig didn’t know about the bridge picture. Liar, most say. The letter into the Times from the guy that blamed McGarry for the opioid crisis and nurses using opioids and they say “set up”. Not canvassing and leaving it up to the internet was another gaff. Doug flopped on so many things he deserved to lose. Sour grapes blaming voter apathy was another gaff. Voting programs changed was another flop at the last minute. I still remember how they treated us and Kayla Android on the water issues, with contempt. How all council returned is beyond me, but a new mayor was in the cards for the better.

    Maggie November 9, 2018 at 4:22 pm

Was so great to get rid of Craig & have a change. But what a disappointment that all of the Councillors returned.
Why is that? People only know those names – did not do any investigating of new names or was this fixed so that indirectly Craig has kept control????????
We can name off those Councillors that will still go by what Craig tells them what to do – it will be most interesting as only 3 of the Councillors were thinkers – the other 5 were “staff told me or Craig ordered me” – so we shall see…..
The good news we were told is we don’t need dyke any more – can we ship him to some other poor city. He also did as he was told. And over paid for it to a tune of approx. $250,000. plus benefits – really – to do as he was told hmmmmm$
So Mayor McGarry – good luck with what you have been handed. We are behind you!

    Enough November 13, 2018 at 11:18 am

On no – after this dishonest action by the booted out Mayor – he thinks he can run for PC rep – you have to be kidding. This just showed how despicable a person he is & he wants to now ruin the PC Party. He got voted out by a huge margin & part of the reason was that he showed his true colours in this instance so what will he be up to if he gets into the PC Party – oh no – get lost Craig – we don’t want you spending our government money any more than we liked your spending our Cambridge Tax dollars on items we did not need. You ran Cambridge into the ground – via ignoring the needle issue & the homeless people – so now you think you can mess up the PC Party – oh no – oh no – go – get lost!!
Can’t you go to Fla. or somewhere & just retire with all your Teacher’s pensions & whatever else you have gotten while as Mayor. We have had enough of you – go!

Harold Cutting November 14, 2018 at 5:33 pm

Mr. Craig is now history as the mayor of Cambridge. If he gets the nod for the P.C. party he will not get my vote. It was time for him to retire and pass wind in the forest. The Tories are desperate for someone anyone to run. I will vote Green this time. It looks like he has an ego problem and needs to be in the limelight. Good bye Doug.

    Enough November 15, 2018 at 9:49 am

Harold – love what you had to say – every word so true. I am with you – either Green party of Bernier. Enough of Craig – can he not just retire & enjoy all that money he made while Mayor??
Yes afraid if this is all the PC party can find to run – time for a change of party. We knew he had an ego – he is still “surprised” he didn’t get voted back in as Mayor. As there are people that will tell you the last two elections were likely fixed so he should not have been in all these years to waste money on his lagacy projects – apparently the Gold Post Office is not working out – surprise – surprise. Some idiots just don’t know when it is time to stop!!

    Maggie December 12, 2018 at 7:38 pm

wow – does Craig have nerve – pats himself on the back in a paper article – after he got booted out big time – & now his buddy Frank is recommending his name on the “Bridge to Nowhere” – no way – after this nonsense of taking McGarry out of the photo shoot – no – he does not deserve his name on it.
Gary Dyke told me at a finance meeting that the Bridge was paid for out of surplus Hydro money – therefore it should be called the “People’s Bridge” – it was paid with money from the people – and this is disgusting when you think some people can’t even pay their hydro bills. No to Craig – absolutely not. Frank should be ashamed even suggesting it. Craig is gone – got voted out BIG TIME – so who wants to name an unneeded bridge after him. He wasted our Tax dollars big time. Enough – we sure don’t want to be reminded of his wastefulness.
Name the Bridge after Claudette Millar – 1st Mayor of Cambridge or name it the “People’s Bridge’ – we paid for it$$$
